FAQs

Where does the Concert Band rehearse?

West Winds Concert Band rehearses every Wednesday evening during school terms from 7:30pm - 9:00pm. Players are expected to arrive at least 15 mins early to set up, tune, and be ready to play at 7:30.

Rehearsals are currently held at Rainworth State School in the Multi Purpose Room.

Where does the Big Band rehearse?

Kate Street Big Band rehearses every second Saturday afternoon during school terms from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Players are expected to arrive at least 15 mins early to set up, tune, and be ready to play at 2:00.

Rehearsals are currently held at Good News Lutheran School (Middle Park) in the Music Building.

What level do I need to be to join?

As a non-audition group we ask all new players to be able to read and play music to around AMEB grade 5 or above. This means you can play your instrument in time, and in tune (or at least be able to read a tuner and follow a metronome when practicing).

We are happy for any new player to come and try out a few rehearsals with us to see if they can keep up with the pace of things and to practice following a conductor (as this can be quite challenging for someone who has only ever played alone).

The Big Band may require you to improvise solos on your instrument as well, so please keep this in mind if you are wanting to join this band.

If you need help finding a more suitable group for your level, don't hesitate to ask us, we all started somewhere.

Does it cost anything to join?

Yes, there is a fee for each member of the BrizWest Community Music Ensembles Inc. This fee is used to cover the hire cost of the practice room, purchase of new music, food, conductor's honorariums, and insurance. Fees are paid each term.

Fees Payable Per School Term:

West Winds Concert Band Members - $75

Kate Street Big Band Members - $55

Member of Both Bands - $110

Can I hire an instrument through BrizWest if I join?

BrizWest Music Ensembles does not have the facilities to provide hire instruments to members. You may be able to borrow an instrument from a family member or friend, or through OzWinds (not sponsored or affiliated with BrizWest Community Music Ensembles Inc).

Will I be given private lessons if I join?

Simply put, no. Rehearsal time is for putting all the parts together that each individual has been practicing. If you need extra lessons, please ask as we may know someone in your area that can teach you.

What instruments do you need?

Membership numbers change constantly throughout the year, so our need for different instruments is always changing. For the most up-to-date list of what instruments we need, please contact us on the Contact page. The contact form will send your enquiry to the BrizWest President and our band director.

Can I hire one of your groups to perform?

Yes! One of the things that any music group can tell you is that they are constantly looking for more places perform; we are no different! For more information about our availability, fees and a list of repertoire, please contact us via the Contact page.
